Two Papers
Best way to remember the ’80s
Jim Pavelich, who founded the Vail Daily in 1981 and sold it for millions in 1993, is channeling the past in more ways than one, launching a new five-day-a-week Eagle County newspaper called the Vail Mountaineer in mid June and dedicating it to the spirit of the 10th Mountain Division ski troopers who discovered and developed Vail.
Pavelich went on to start several free dailies in California and Denver after selling the Vail Daily. However, he always maintained a home in Arrowhead and raised his family in the area, commuting between Vail and the Bay Area. Now he’s settling down and starting another paper.
“I just think it’s good to have another voice in the community,” Pavelich said. “When you have two different voices in the community, they’ll both make the other one better and that will benefit people. As we grow and improve, the Vail Daily also will improve, and Vail will end up with two great daily newspapers.”
