Winemaker Dinner with Groom Wines Tonight at Sapphire Restaurant

Winemaker Dinner with Groom Wines Tonight at Sapphire Restaurant

Where: Sapphire Restaurant
When: Wednesday, November 4th at 6:30pm
Cost: $75/person

We first tasted and loved Daryl Groom's wines before they were available in Colorado. We kept Groom in Sapphire and served their wines when sat down to a special family or friend's dinner. You've probably already tried wine made by Daryl Groom and not realized it. He's been a winemaker at a couple of big, well-known wineries - Penfolds in Australia. In California he made wines for Gary Farrell, Wild Horse Winery and Geyser Peak Winery where he was recognized with over two dozen national and international awards.  Or as one critic claimed he was, "the genius who took Geyser Peak from plonk to first rate".

If you are really lucky, you might have tasted the near-legendary 1986 Penfolds Grange made by Groom, which earned a 99-point rating from influential wine critic Robert Parker. Grange, made predominantly from Shiraz, is considered one of the top wines in the world and at auction has sold for over $60,000 a bottle. In 1996 the Groom’s bought the land next door to the Penfolds' Grange vineyards and planted 42 acres of Shiraz.

Featured Wines For The Evening:
The 2009 highest rated Australian Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc shows good acidity but is soft and pleasurable to drink. Groom blends separate lots of grapes from distinct parts of his vineyard in Adelaide.

The 2007 Groom Barossa Valley Shiraz is a dark, beautifully structured wine, silky-textured and delicious.

My favorite of the group might just be the 2008 Barossa Valley "Bush Block" Zinfandel, with its seductive aroma and flavors of dried fruit. It's made from intensely flavored grapes grown on "bush-trained" vines that are only a foot high, producing an intense bouquet.
