Fresh start on Vail Mountain

Fresh start on Vail Mountain

VAIL, Colorado — Vail's start to the 2010-11 ski season was almost surreal — every skier and snowboarder at the mountain seemed to be smiling because of the deep snow Mother Nature so kindly provided to Vail Mountain this last week.

The snow was the talk of the hill Friday at Vail. There was just so much of it that people were having a hard time believing it was an opening day in November, and not a spring-time powder day.

“Usually I don't want to fight the crowds (on opening day), but it's worth it today,” said Debbie Tyler, a snowboarder.

Vail Mountain announced Wednesday that it was doubling its opening day terrain from what was previously announced earlier in the week. Even resort...

Snow blankets Vail

VAIL, Colorado — Vail got its first blast of snow Monday, inspiring many local skiers and snowboarders to check out Arapahoe Basin's opening day.

Only problem: Getting there was pretty epic in and of itself.

Stuck in standstill traffic on Interstate 70 Monday morning, Eagle resident Eric Tarkanian hit a snag in his trip to A-basin.

Earlier that morning he looked at the mountain's web cam and liked what he saw: Lots of snow and not-too-large crowds. So he set out to try A-basin's new chair lifts — and enjoy winter's sudden arrival.

“I've been waiting a long time for this,” the 38-year-old skier said. “It came on so quickly. I couldn't pass it up.”

Getting over the pass was another story.

Greek food fast in Minturn

Greek food fast in Minturn

MINTURN, Colorado — The only thing better than eating Greek food is Greek food that comes to you quickly.

In Greek time, quick is any expanse of time less than it took to build the Acropolis.

But Stephen Porter doesn't function on Greek time, he functions on entrepreneur time. So when you go to Nicky's Quickie in Minturn you get great Greek food faster than you can say “This is the best idea since they put the pocket in pita.”

Nicky's Quickie has been open less than two weeks, and, so far so good.

“You can eat our food with confidence. It's hearty, healthy and it tastes...

Weekend Suggestions

Summer is well under way in the Vail Valley.

Last weekend featured phenomenal fireworks on Saturday night over Harry A. Nottingham Park & Lake in Avon.

Fireworks above Avon by Jon Sheppard

They were spectacular and the weather was perfect!
Vail’s 4th of July parade did not disappoint though I was a tad late for viewing from Bart & Yeti’s deck. I blame my tardiness more on old age than Beer Drinking Buddy’s beer tasting event in my dining room following Avon’s Fireworks.
The Beaver Creek concert was enjoyable until we were drowned out by Mother...

Vail's Vonn wins 3rd straight World Cup

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany — Standing atop the mountain, Lindsey Vonn already was the best skier in the world for the third year in a row.

She didn't even have to make her last run, but she raced anyway and won Friday's super-G to become the most accomplished skier the United States has ever had.

Vonn won her third straight overall World Cup title when her rival and friend Maria Riesch was bumped out of the top two in the race earlier in the day. Vonn then bumped everyone else down another spot, winning the 33rd World Cup race of her career to put the cherry on top of what was already a wildly successful day.

"I gave it all I had. I have nothing more," Vonn said. "I am the most successful American...

Vail's Commission on Special Events Awards Funding for 2010

If the town of Vail's Commission on Special Events gave every organization and event exactly what it asked for in 2010, the Commission would have come up more than $844,000 short.

The seven-member Commission on Special Events board met Wednesday morning and chipped away at whatever it could in order to give funding to established events, as well as events in which board members see potential. The Vail Town Council put the Commission's 2010 budget at $791,810, the same amount as the 2009 budget.

One of the new events board members see potential in is the Colorado Soul Festival, a new event in August that would host soul musicians, cultural activities, seminars and workshops.

Board member Meggan Kirkham said music events are a big asset to the...

Vail, Colorado's election season officially began earlier this month, giving the nine candidates running for the Town Council's four open seats about one month to campaign, debate and study up on what's important to the town and its residents.

The Vail Daily and the Vail Homeowners Association hosted the second candidate forum Wednesday at the Donovan Pavilion with a list of questions that tried to find out the issues behind the issues. What emerged wasn't much different from the candidate forum last week, but larger issues did become more apparent, and election distractions became very...

Supporting our local's in a time of need

10 ways to eat & drink well and support members of our community in need.

I think August 2009 will raise significant funds for a very large and diverse group of local organizations and individuals.  I read yesterday that the number of volunteers in Colorado is increasing dramatically as our economy continues to dip and lag.  I find that news to be an encouraging comment on our state and I am certain that it translates to Eagle County.

Wrapping up July with culture & sport

Well it’s Friday and I am still planning for the weekend.  I can’t believe that July is wrapping up and August is just around the corner.

Friday, July 24, 2009

Friday’s at the Park is a great family friendly event at the Park Hyatt in Beaver Creek.  Free activities for the kids plus music, food & drink specials for the adults might be worth checking out.  It starts in just a few minutes.

Heading into Lionshead is another good option family entertainment on the mall and free gondola rides to Talons deck for a pretty good deck party.  I may stick closer to home and swing by

It's time for summer picnics

Mark your calendars for the Town of Vail's tenth annual neighborhood picnic series, July 23 at Bighorn Park and Aug. 20 at Donovan Park. Colorado-Eagle River Ride Coming to Town

07/16/09

Colorado-Eagle River Ride Coming to Town

This annual bike race starts and ends in Beaver Creek, taking participants on a scenic ride along the Eagle and Colorado Rivers. Contestants can choose from a 100-mile, 100-kilometer, or 42-mile course.

All courses take riders through the Eagle River Valley up the rural setting of Highway 131 and along the Colorado River. Unlike many Colorado 100 rides, the Colorado Eagle River Ride is a flatter course, without a lot of the steep climbing featured in other rides.

The Colorado-Eagle River Ride is an important fundraiser for the Snowboard Outreach Society (or SOS) - a local not-for-profit organization that provides high quality recreation programs to underserved youth.

Vail Mountain announces opening and closing dates

Vail Mountain announces opening and closing dates

Next year's operating schedule is out for Vail Mountain. The resort will begin scheduled operations for the 2009-2010 winter season on Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., weather permitting.

The dates are a sigh of relief for those who heard rumors that the mountain may close before Easter in 2010. Easter is April 4 of 2010, and the resort will remain open daily through Sunday, April 18, 2010 with hours extending over the course of the season.

Early- and late-season terrain offerings will be adjusted as weather and snow permit. Terrain, lifts, restaurants and other services will likely be limited during the first and last weeks of the season.
