Vail Firefighters Wear Pink Helmets to Raise Awareness

Vail Firefighters Wear Pink Helmets to Raise Awareness

(Vail)--If you see a firefighter wearing a pink helmet in Vail, there’s no need to adjust your glasses. The firefighters at Vail Fire and Emergency Services are taking turns wearing a pink helmet as a new addition to their turn-out gear. A pink helmet may look a bit out of place at the fire station, but the firefighters are donning it with a smile. It’s all part of campaign to raise money for the Vail Breast Cancer Awareness Group (VBCAG). The helmet was donated by the Beaver Creek Resort Company and will be awarded to the highest bidder during a live auction at the 15th Annual Celebration of Life luncheon on July 14 at the Park Hyatt, Beaver Creek, with all the proceeds going directly to the VBCAG.

When Fire Captain Cooter Overcash saw a pink lacrosse helmet raising awareness for breast cancer, he saw a way for the fire service to help. The pink helmet is an authentic leather firefighter helmet that was professionally painted by Melvin Valdez of the town’s Public Works Department.

Firefighters participated in the Snowshoe Shuffle wearing the helmet earlier this month. The helmet will also travel to other fire departments prior to the auction to help raise awareness in other parts of the country.

“Breast cancer has affected most of us, either directly or indirectly,” said Firefighter Mike Malec after the race. “If nothing else, the helmet is a great conversation starter.”
