Amy's Tips for a fun Vail Valley weekend

Amy's Tips for a fun Vail Valley weekend

Boy am I ready for summer.

It appears as if we finally have a nice day, I hope I can still say that at 3:00pm.

One of my “new” favorites is Blue Plate Bistro in Avon.  The outdoor deck is really nice and the food is great.  Adam cooks up great homemade products and the prices are terrific.  Ellie is always on hand to make sure that service is friendly and efficient and her Strawberry Mojito is fresh and fantastic.  They have the best “skinny” fries and I love the eclectic worldview menu.

As some of you may know after a 10-year hiatus my husband Bill is back in the kitchen.  I first met Bill when he was the Chef de Cuisine at Alfredo’s at the Westin in Vail in 1990.  He took a break from the kitchen in 1999, but has recently opened the Mountain Thyme Market with Betsy Wilson up by the Cordillera Post Office.  They are open Daily, except Sunday’s from 8:30am to 5:00pm and have an all day menu that includes Betsy’s Fabulous Crepes (She had the Crepe Cart in Beaver Creek for most of one Season) homemade soups, salads, sandwiches and several specials that change daily.  They also sell fully prepared, fresh and nutrious meals including roast chicken, vegetarian lasagna, elk chili, and meatloaf with mashies and salmon with veggies.  It is a bit off the beaten path, unless of course you live in Cordillera, but a great place to meet & eat if you’re in that neighborhood.

I am really excited about the changes at the Wolcott Yacht Club and I am looking forward to lunch there in about an hour.  The patio is as nice as ever and the additions to the menu are really exciting.  I have recently had Sunday Brunch and a Breakfast meeting at the Wolcott Yacht Club and they were both terrific.   I hope that tonight the weather holds as their FAC (Friday Afternoon Club) is scheduled for a Pig Roast with Jonny Mogambo and they really deserve good weather after the soggy spring that we have seen.

There are a few things going on this weekend.  Looks like my Saturday may include participation in the 2nd JAR Poker run (www.jarpokerrun.com) in honor of my former co-worker and friend Jose Rodriguez on Saturday, starting at the Gashouse in Edwards (10am ish) and ending at Finnegan’s Wake (4 pm ish).  It is open to the public.  This is a fundraiser for local medical charities.    Also on Saturday for the less adventurous crowd Edwards will be home to the Family Fun Fair in Freedom Park (10 am – 4 pm) and the Farmers Market at the Edwards Corner (9:30am – 2:00pm).  Both well worth checking out.

On Sunday, I think the 50% off at 8100 at the Park Hyatt is a great call for Brunch.  The price includes a Bloody Mary Bar, which is probably my favorite way to enjoy a leisurely Sunday.  The Doggy Dash at Avon’s Harry A. Nottingham Park might be a nice pre-brunch warm-up; registration is at 8 with a 3-mile walk to follow.  This is a fundraiser for the Vail Pet Partners; this program was featured in our February issue of Vail-Beaver Creek Magazine.  I wonder if Isis is up for the adventure?

It looks like several other summer events including the Beaver Creek Rodeo, Vail & Minturn Farmers markets and several FAC’s will kick off next week, I will get their details posted early in the week.

Until then, I wish good food, fabulous fun and great wine for all.
