Snow Shoeing and Skiing the Beav
It was cold a few weeks ago and I decided to skip riding and take a snowshoe…I’m not sure if any of you have been to the Vail Golf Course Nordic Center, but you should go! I rented snowshoes and took off for a hike! Renting the shoes was only $12! And you can have your choice of walking the trail that is paved or you can explore on your own for no cost at all. Since this was my first time out this year I paid for a ticket to walk the paved track and was off! We hiked for the entire trail even though I was pooped half way through. I decided to keep going for some extra exercise – I was with my friend Kelsie who is a personal trainer – so I couldn’t quit! We went 6 miles round trip – you can of course go many different ways, but I’m pretty sure we went the straight route and it was still 6 miles! I broke a sweat I’ll tell you that much! What a great work out and the track was paved really well but also had some challenging parts with deep snow for extra work! There was a ton of cross-country skiers on the track as well and really fun to watch their graceful strides. Maybe next time Ill strap on a pair of cross-country skies for a nice work out at the Nordic Center!
I had some friends in town this past weekend and we were able to get up and ski the Beav. I live in Vail so sometimes parking and getting up there is difficult because on the busiest week of the year – the lots fill up by 8am! I’m typically a snowboarder, but I hopped on skis so I could teach/reteach my friend some basics on Alpines. We had a great day out there! It was like a spring skiing day and the snow was still in great condition! I had to strip a layer of clothing because I was so hot! The lift lines were non-existent for the busiest week of the year and everyone seemed in great spirits! The next day though – the temp dropped to a very chilly 5 degrees but that meant a storm was about to come through! On Monday afternoon sure enough the snow began to fall and just last night Vail got 8 or so inches and its still falling! Vail Pass is closed, which means good news for local skiers and visitors because the slopes won’t be crowded at all, but bad news for those people staying or living in Summit County or the Front Range – they’ll have to wait until tomorrow to ski the powder in Vail!
